Google’s Penguin Update

Anindya,  Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

When Webmasters and Bloggers are still struggling with Google Panda Update, the new algorithm in the name of “Google Penguin Update” has come up as yet another threat to a considerable number of websites. Google has rolled out this update in order to decrease the ranking of all such sites that are violating the existing quality guidelines. The Penguin Update is focused to penalize those who are using tricky webspam tactics for over optimization. In post Penguin Update period the Penguin update can not only decrease the traffic of the websites but it also has a big tendency to damage the SERP ranking. Penguin Update has been launched as an effort to promote quality content and reduce webspam.

Google’s Penguin Update is an improved version of Panda Update which was released on the 24th of April 2012. It aims at demolishing all those websites that are over-optimized with webspam techniques. Many sites have been seen to use wrong tactics and a shortcut to bring traffic and rank higher than expectations; these tactics are of no use to the users and Google’s new algorithm is targeted to penalize such sites. Therefore, while Google Panda will fight against low quality pages the Penguin will focus on spam content.

You can be safe and stay away from being hit by Penguin update if your website is not using any spammed, old-fashioned strategies. It is mainly going to affect those websites which are loaded with low quality contents and abuses the guidelines of inbound linking.

If you are wondering whether your website can be hit by Penguin or not, it’s easy to find it out. Simply search with common keywords in Google to check whether it is getting the same rank that it used to get previously. Check the website statistics to find out whether there is a major traffic drop compared to the previous stats. If it is yes, you are likely to be hit by Penguin Update and if there is no change, then you are safe.

To Avoid being Hit by Panda do the Following:

  • It is time to stop comment spamming; commenting on high page rank websites for the sake of getting BackLinks or using automation commenting over-stuffed with keywords and links, will make Google identify them easily and the sites using such spam techniques will be penalized in Post Penguin age.
  • Avoid the contents which are overflowed with same keywords. Since keywords are an essential part of SEO and it is the keywords that help the users to get relevant contents by means of search engines; repeating the same keywords again and again make Google suspect and penalize.
  • Avoid duplicate content; you cannot attain high rank in SERP by copying contents. Therefore, instead of copying contents from others, concentrate on making your unique, fresh contents. Otherwise, you many face penalty and your blog may get banned from SERP.

Link Building Tips for Surviving the Penguin Update:

  • Whenever you post fresh contents to your site make it a point to share it on your social pages like Google+, Facebook or Twitter.
  • During Link building do not make the mistake of linking to your homepage, rather link to the inner content pages. Keep in mind that apart from external links, internal links are also very important and will help both Google and your visitors to crawl your site easily.
  • Avoid over-optimization by diversifying your anchor texts. There should not be a feeling that you are you are forcibly trying to rank a site for a particular keyword, therefore, try to diverge your anchor links in a natural way.
  • Keep focus on quality, not quantity; having a large number of backlinks from untrustworthy sites, you can be penalized, therefore, prefer high quality, small number of posts rather than large number of low quality ones.
  • Focus on producing high quality contents that people like to link from websites and from their social profiles.

Do not worry! Google Penguin update is not going to affect those websites which are using pure SEO and high quality contents. This new algorithm is surely meant to give the users a better way of searching and better search results. It will also give a boost to high quality blogs or websites by ranking them high in Search Engine Results.

If your site is already a victim of this update and has lost ranking an traffic we can bring it back by our purely white –hat technique of Link Building. Before the situation gets more worse contact us today and allow us to help you to regain your lost position. Mail us at info@indusnet.co.uk

Anindya,  Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Pinterest is the latest entrant in the field of Social bookmarking. It is a social bookmarking site with a little twist. Pinterest is based on the concept of curation. It allows users to create visual collection of things they find interesting on the web. You surf the web and when you come across something interesting, you pin those onto something called “pinboards”.

These pinboards are then organized based upon the theme like “Infographics”, “Places of Interest”, “Home decoration”, “wedding gowns” etc. These pinned items and boards can be shared with others. Other people with similar interest can follow you and like your pins and also can comment on it. So Pinterest is not only a social bookmarking and sharing site but also a acts like a social network site too.

In a very short span of time it has created quite a buzz in the Internet. A primary reason for the enormous success of Pinterest is because of the fact that basic human behavior has been transported to the web. Many of us during our teenage days, have created collages by cutting pictures of celebrities and visual ads and pasted it on the wall to feel cool. The same way we feel cool about sharing interesting stuffs on the web.

According to founder of Pinterest the mission is to “connect everyone in the world through the “things” they find interesting”. And true to it’s mission it is helping like-minded people with similar tastes to connect with each other virtually.

Few Facts about Pinterest

Pinterest is co-founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp and was launched as beta among a closed group of people in March 2010, later on it opened up to public as invitation only.

It is built in Python(Django), MySQL, Redis, Solr and Hadoop.

Among the Pinterest users, 80% are female, 47% are between ages of 18-34 and 69% have household income between $25,000 to $75,000 per year.

In a minute almost 1090 users visit Pinterest.

Pinterest is the fastest growing social network site with more than 10 million users in 2 years since it’s launch.

Pinterest became the third largest social network in US in March 2012.

Jane Wang the most followed user in Pinterest with 2854609 followers is the mother of co-founder Ben Silbermann’s mother.

Pinterest accounts for 3.6% of referral traffic almost same as twitter with 3.61%. So it is increasingly being preferred by brands.

Changing Profile Picture

You can either choose to display your Facebook profile picture or Twitter profile picture. If you want to add your own picture, you can choose to upload an image from your computer and set that as your profile picture. You will see 2 buttons “refresh from Facebok” and “refresh from Twitter” near the profile image that helps in updating Facebook and Twitter profile picture as your Pinterest picture.

Adding/Inviting Friends

You can even find friends from other social network as well as your email contacts. Go to http://pinterest.com/invites/ and select the services from where you want to find and invite friends. After you select the desired service, you have to allow Pinterest to access the service.

Creating Pin Board

Boards and Pins are the heart of Pinterest. Boards or Pin boards are collection of pins belonging to similar theme or niche. The first thing you need to do after you edit your profile is to create few boards based on the things you like. Pinterest will automatically give you few pin board ideas, you can choose those or create your own pin boards. You can have boards like Places of interest, Recipe collection, Shades of my life, blogging resources etc.

If you want to add new boards any time in the future, you can click on the Add button which will give you option as shown below to add pin, upload pin or create a board.

While creating a board, you have to give a name and assign a category to the board and select who can pin unto it. Once a board is created, you will, be taken to the board page, there you can click on “Edit board” button to add/edit few more things like description and make changes to the board settings.

How to Pin

Pinterest is all about pinning things you like. So how do you accomplish this basic task of Pinterest. You can pin things in various ways like using the PinIt bookmarklet or via pinterest website or through the Pin It buttons on websites where it is installed.

You can install the Pin It button on your browser’s favorite bar. It will sit on the browser just like a ny other favorite items. Once the Pin it bookmarklet is installed, you can just push this button when you come across something worth sharing in pinterest. This will automatically shows you list of pinnable images and you can select the one you want to be shown.

The Pin It buttons added to a website can also help in adding stuffs from that website. If a visitor on the website come across an interesting thing, they can just click on the Pin It button on the article and the article will be pinned to one of the board in his Pinterest profile.

There is also an iPhone app that helps in browsing pins and boards, repin, like and comments on pins> You can pin with iPhone camera and add a location to it too.

Finding Pins and Boards

In Pinterest you can use the search bar at the top left to find interesting pins, pinners and boards to follow. Any search terms will bring result categorized into Pins, Boards and People as shown below:

From the search result you can follow boards and other pinners.

Following Boards:

You can follow boards and pinners of your interest. When you are viewing the profile of any pinner you have the option to follow individual board the pinners have created or follow all his board at once.

Following People

Like any other social network, Pinterest allows to follow people you know and also to people who seems interesting to you. When you are logged in, it will ask you to click on few things you like and based upon your selection Pinterest will automatically suggest you pinners to follow.

You can also follow people by searching for them through the search option. You can follow and unfollow people anytime you want. Just click on Follow button below the picture of the person in search result. If you want to unfollow them, just click on the shaded unfollow button. While searching for a pinner or a board, it will auto populate the people or board list if the result matches something you are following (see the bigger circle in the image).

Repin, Like and Comments

You can repin an already pinned items, you can like that and add comment to it. Just hover the mouse over the pinned image in Pinterest and you will see 3 new buttons Repin, Like and Comment.

You can click on repin to pin others pinned items. When you repin an image it gets added to one of your board and you can add your own description. But the source always remains the same. When you like a pin it does not get added to your board but appear in your profile’s likes section. So liking a pin is like keeping in Favorite or bookmarking. Below each pin, you can see it’s statistics like how many likes, repin and comment that has got.

Editing a Pin

You can edit your pinned items. To do so, you can view your pins in thumbnail view and hover the mouse over the image, it will give you an edit button on mouse hover. Once yiu make the desired changes, click on save.

Adding price, Mention and Tags to a Pin

Pinterest is most popular among online marketers. Often brands want to show the price of products they offer and Pinterest helps in displaying that price. Have you seen few images having a diagonal price ribbon at the top? That can be generated by typing $, €, or £ in the pin description along with the amount. Pinterest supports $Price, #Tags and @mentions.

Just like twitter, you can mention the name of a Pinner whom you want to have a look at your pin. For that you need to follow atleast one board belonging to that user. If that hold true, you can add the user by typing @username in description or comment and the matches to that name will auto populated and you can select the one actually want.

While writing this article I came across an interesting finding, which lets you search all the pins related to a website. If you ever want to find out all the pins belonging to a particular website you can do that by using the following format:

http://pinterest.com/source/website URL/

Say, we want to find out all the pins from masahble.com website. For that you need to type http://pinterest.com/source/mashable.com/ in the browser and hit enter to see the magic.

Pinterest has redefined the way social media is used to produce content. Gone are the days when we used to bookmark boring text links, with Pinterest our bookmarks have become more organized and more colorful. Pinterest has variety of uses for different group of people. It can be used to plan your wedding, create an online cookbook or get ideas for your perfect home. Pinterest has found it’s uses not only among personal users but among brands to promote their products, educationists to share knowledge and resources among other teachers and students, bloggers to share their contents and get article ideas.

So in a way we can say that Pinterest has something to offer for every genre. Even recruiters can use Pinterest for hiring the right candidates. Another USP of Pinterest is it’s simple yet appealing User Interface. It has been the talk of the town and website and UI framework developers are extensively trying to reproduce the interface. In a very short span of time Pinterest has become quite popular but only time will tell how far it will go to recreate the history.

Mobile Advertising 101

Anindya,  Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Introduction

Mobile advertising is the most popular form of advertising. It is the most exciting frontiers in interactive advertising. Part of the success of mobile advertising can be attributed to the growing demand and reach of mobile devices in addition to the evolution of sophisticated smart phones. Internet has now been reinvented on mobile devices, so as the advertising. Mobile advertisement is an essential pillar of online marketing strategy.

Each and every company/business is trying to reach to as many customers as possible and mobile as a medium is successfully catering to the need. Advertisers are shifting focus from mainstream computers to Mobile devices, hence smaller, personalized and interactive form of advertisement is also gradually gaining popularity.

In the latest “Mobile Advertising and Marketing 3rd Edition” report  by Berg Insight the global mobile marketing and advertising market will grow from € 1 billion in 2008 to € 8.7 billion in 2014 which is a 43 percent Compounded Annual Growth Rate. At that value it will be 11.7 percent of total digital advertising. The number presented above gives an idea about how mobile advertising is gradually playing an important role.

Mobile Advertising ecosystem

The mobile advertising ecosystem involves several intermediaries between the “Advertisers” and the “Consumers”.  When a message has to be conveyed from an Advertiser to an intended consumer, it has to be processed through Ad agency, Content publishers, Mobile Carrier and finally to the Consumer. The figure below gives workflow of a typical mobile advertising campaign:

Types of Mobile Advertisement

Mobile advertisement is of various types. They vary from a simple SMS to rich media ads like animated graphics and video. These ads can be highly targeted and can be displayed based on user’s behavior. Let’s discuss below the various forms of mobile advertisement:

SMS (Short Messaging Service)

This is the primitive and simplest form of mobile advertisement and exists from a long time ago. This kind of advertisement is supported by all the mobile phones and hence it has the highest reach. But the conversion rate for SMS ads is very low. Whatever information a brand wants to convey to the consumers is composed in short message and sent via a SMS gateway.

SMS advertising is suitable for sending coupon and special discounts. Retail, restaurants and entertainment markets get benefitted through this form of mobile advertising. If this SMS ad is used excessively by sending same message to a number multiple times, it cause irritation among customers and can be fatal to a brand.

Text Ads

These kinds of ads are displayed like a normal text on mobile websites. These ads are currently responsible for 50% of mobile Internet traffic as they fit in almost any mobile device and mobile web browsers having Internet access. The Text ads like normal desktop ads contain 3 lines of text and a URL that links to the advertiser’s website.

Image Ads

The image ads can be of 2 types. One that is served through MMS and another served through Mobile websites. This is a popular method of advertising. The image ads include both static and animated images. In image ads via MMS, the advertisers load static and animated images to an ad server and the ad server identifies the mobile device and serve related ads. In the image ads via mobile sites, the ads images are embedded on the mobile web pages and appear while browsing the mobile sites.

Graphical Banners

There are various types and size of graphical banner ads available for mobile. These ads may be quite interactive and can have call to action button placed on it. The difference between image ads and banner ads is that image ads might not have a clickable component whereas the graphical ads have a clickable component.

Video Ads

These kinds of ads are usually supported by high end mobile devices and resemble mainstream advertisement. The ads that are displayed on TV or websites can also be displayed on mobile devices. For example while playing videos in sites like youtube, few of the videos want you to see the video ads before the actual video is played.

Embedded Ads

These kinds of ads are generally part of free mobile games or apps and displayed during game play.

Push Notification/Scroll Ads

These kinds of ads are pushed to your mobile device and appear when the mobile device is idle. Usually these ads ask you to perform some action to deliver further content. These ads are served through the mobile operator.

Mobile Ads Transmission Options

Mobile ads can be served via various medium as given below:

  • Short Messaging Service
  • Multimedia messaging Service
  • Premium SMS
  • Subscription based SMS service
  • Wireless Access Protocol sites
  • Mobile Web
  • Mobile Operator (via caller tunes and IVRS)
  • Streaming media
  • Broadcast Media

Mobile Ad Network

In order to facilitate the mobile advertising, the mobile ad networks play an important role. These ad networks are the one where advertisers meet the publishers. Below are a list of global renowned ad networks:

Admob

Admob has been acquired by Google in 2009. It is one of the world’s largest mobile advertising platform. It serves as high as 40 billion banner and text ads per month across mobile web and mobile apps.

iAds

iAds is a mobile advertising platform from Apple. iAds has been a part of iOS 4. It helps third party application developers to embed advertisement into the apps they build for iPhones and iPads.

inMobi

Founded in India, inMobi is the largest independent mobile advertising network in the world. It is a performance based mobile advertising network and helps advertisers reach their target audience and publishers monetize their content. It started as an SMS based search platform.

Microsoft Adcenter

Mobile advertising solution from Microsoft offers both display ads and search advertising. According to Microsoft the mobile display ad solution connects to nearly 50 million unique users and the mobile search ad solution leverage the partnership with Bing and Yahoo and reaches to almost 28 million users.

Apart from the above list of ad network there are several smaller and powerful players like Millenial Media, Mojiva, EnPocket etc.

Mobile Advertising Pricing models

The pricing model for mobile display advertising is similar to pc based advertising. Depending upon the publishers, ad network and product advertisers can choose between the following methods to buy:

Cost Per Click (CPC) : In this type, the advertiser has to pay, only when an ad is clicked by an user.

Cost Per Thousand Impression (CPM): Advertiser has to pay for ads based upon the number of impressions.

Cost Per Action (CPA): Advertiser has to pay when a user performs an action on the ad like providing his/her contact details. On mobile this can also be cost per call.

Few Stats on Mobile advertising

According to an Admob report(2008), US account for 47% percent of total ad request on mobile and India is at second place with 9.8% share.

The following image (courtesy Millenial Media) shows the ad impression through various mobile types as well as ad impressions generated through various mobile OS. According to that report Android OS with 46% share of total ad impressions is clearly the winner. Apple’s iOS is at second with only 32% share.

Advantages of Mobile Advertising

• Mobiles can serve location based advertising pretty well. Most of the smart phones today are equipped with GPS and those mobiles can be used to provide advertising related to freebies and discounts in the area a user is located.

• Mobiles being always-on and always-aware, can provide more effective and timely communication as compared to any other channel. Average response time of SMS is quite less when compared to email or postal mail.

• Mobile having a unique ID (the phone number) which does not change over time (contrast to other methods like IP address for computers) can provide better CRM tracking.

• The mobile advertising can be highly targeted based upon the user and the device. If worked with a mobile carrier, advertisers can have customer data and location information at their disposal.

• This is quite advantageous for app developers to monetize their free apps as well as advantageous for mobile users as they can ad supported apps for free.

Disadvantages

• Not all types of ads are supported on all the devices.

• In some geographic region, the mobile data transfer rate is still slower.

• Even though there is a standard for mobile advertising, it is not yet fully followed.

• Mobile ads may create privacy issues.

Conclusion

Mobile advertising is a rapidly growing sector providing brands, agencies and marketers the opportunity to connect with consumers directly on their mobile phones. If the mobile advertising strategy is not effectively made it may create negative effect instead of bringing any positive values. At a high level view Mobile advertising looks like Internet Advertising or online advertising, but it is infact quite different.

As mobile advertising are more targeted, more interactive and has quite a large reach. Mobile can also be used in cross-media campaigns including TV, Radio, print and Outdoor. Mobiles can also be used for Viral marketing, by which recipient of a mobile ad will forward it to others and others will in turn forward it to their friends. This will result in several people forwarding the advertisement and result in a viral campaign.

Top 10 Blunders You Must Avoid on Twitter

Anindya,  Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

While Twitter is an amazing tool to drive traffic to your website or to market yourself as a professional, it can also become a liability if you do not follow certain rules. In fact, there are certain blunders that many people commit, and end up wasting their time on Twitter and worse, harming their own business and credibility. Here are the top 10 blunders that you must avoid while using Twitter.

Being Impersonal

One of the biggest blunders on Twitter is bring impersonal. Agreed, that it is a micro-blogging service where you do not need to engage in personal conversations. However, it is still a social network where certain aspects of who you are need to be projected. First off, it is important to have a clear picture and then have links to your blog or website. Secondly, do tweet at times about your life and not just about the product or business you want to promote. Try and be nice to people, and maintain cordiality and a degree of familiarity.

Not Customizing Background

There are several great businesses and professionals who just do not use a custom background for their Twitter profile. This is a unique space where you could give out a lot of information that is not possible within the 140 characters bio. Also, don’t go overboard and write a story about yourself in the background image. That really is a blunder.

Not Being Active

There are great Twitter accounts that I unfollowed because they were just not tweeting anymore. It is very important to remain active and tweet at least a few times in a day. Consistent tweets that are informative, fun and useful are always appreciated. However, tweeting 10 times within a span of 10 seconds and not tweeting for the rest of the day is a blunder too. Space your tweets across the day.

Don’t be Noisy

One of the most annoying blunders is to tweet too much. How much is too much? Well, that is a difficult question but no one likes to see your tweets and links constantly appearing in their stream. It is important to resist tweeting all the time. If you really have to tweet anything that comes to your mind, have a different Twitter account for that. Do not confuse your business, personal and anonymous Twitter accounts. Each has its special purpose!

Following too Many People

The idea is not to follow everyone you see on Twitter. The trick is to follow only the most useful people in your industry and a few others from other areas of life. Following too many people will send a wrong signal that you are not an important business who has authority or influence.

Being Full of Yourself

Of course, Twitter is a great place to market yourself. However, it would be a nasty blunder if you tweeted only about yourself, your business or what you want to market. 70% of the tweets must not be self promotional. Only around 30% of the tweets could be used to promote yourself. Otherwise, you will come across as a hustler.

Being Cold

Many twitter users tend to be cold and non-responsive. It is not only rude, but a big blunder not to engage with your audience and talk to them. If you do not connect with your followers and audience, they will eventually get bored of you and will unfollow you. It is important to engage in Twitter conversations and participate in them.

Not Being Helpful

One of the most selfish acts could be to not help others on Twitter. Whether they ask for it or not, if you come across questions in your stream that you are in a position to answer, make sure you do so. Otherwise, you might be mistaken for a cold and profit minded business that cares about no one but promoting oneself. Not a great strategy to drive traffic to your website.

Spamming Your Followers

No matter how tempting it is to share links related to your products, your blog posts and just about anything that is related to you, you must not overdo it. You will come across as a spammer who has more malicious intent than just self-promotion. You can get blocked for appearing as a spammer.

Being Irrelevant

There is nothing worse than being irrelevant. If you are a design company and start tweeting about politics, you will confuse your followers, who may eventually unfollow you. The idea is to stick to what you claim is your mission on Twitter. If you need to tweet about other things, you can always have a second Twitter account that can be used for non-professional purposes.

The Magic of Font Replacement

Anindya,  Thursday, April 12th, 2012

While graphics and images can spruce up a site’s look almost immediately, the importance of typography and font selection can’t be downplayed. In fact, people would not want to take the trouble of reading through content that is not published in an attractive font.

Choice of Typography

Web designers however are limited to using only a few fonts that are ‘web safe’. The idea is to make sure that a certain font which is used is available across all operating systems. If a font is not available on a certain operating system, the page may appear to be filled with numbers and symbols. Moreover, it is no longer accepted to use static techniques to publish content, as they can’t be crawled by search engines. Web designers usually use Georgia, Ariel or Times New Roman for the bulk of the content.

Why Font Replacement is Necessary and How to Achieve it

However, it tends to become monotonous and even mundane to use the same fonts all across. If designers choose to use something that is a bit edgy or exciting, they might try dynamic text replacement. The idea is to make headers, quotes and such other text with a font that is eye-catching and attractive. Dynamic text replacement must not be used for entire pages, but only those bits and parts which need to stand out, like headings, quotes, menu items and whatever else you might think is important to be highlighted. With HTML5 and CSS3 invading the web evermore, several new font replacement techniques have appeared.

Font Replacement Techniques

Let’s take a look at services and products that are available for web designers in order to assist with font replacement.

  • Typekit:
It is open to all and a designer shall have to subscribe to a font library from one of the many foundries. You would need to customize CSS for it to work and create a font stack to fallback upon, if the font isn’t supported.
  • Kernest:
This is yet another service which is open to all and comes with an a la carte selection of different fonts. All that you would need to do is select the fonts you desire and paste them into the generated CSS style sheet. Unlike Typekit, you would not require JavaScript. Many fonts are free, so it can be quite attractive.
  • Typotheque:
Another open-to-all service, Typotheque comes with a number of fonts which can be selected, and pasted generated CSS into the stylesheet just like Kernest.
  • Font Squirrel:
This too uses @font-face and it looks good on Apple computers as well. It is one of the most preferred techniques at the moment.

There are also certain techniques which do not make use of @font-face, and use Flash and scripting to display fonts that may not be available on the users system. These techniques are free too, and are easy to use.

  • sIFR (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement):
You would need to embed your font in a Flash SWF file. The chosen text will be converted to Flash text by JavaScript which can later be altered as you require. It is rather difficult to set up as certain aspect are handled by either CSS or JavaScript.
  • Cufon:
This is a really popular service which allows you to convert your font to a JavaScript, VML or HTML5 formats. However, Cufon causes a flicker on the screen when Internet is slow.
  • Google’s Font API Service:
This is an open source project that is provided by Google. However, if Google servers are down, your fonts may perhaps have a bad day too.

Useful Resources for Web Designers

The techniques that are available for font replacement are several and there are several exhaustive references online. We have compiled a list of useful references that would help web designers to engage in font replacement. Smashing Magazine has a list of tools and techniques to ensure rich typography on the web. Tutsplus, Zomigi and Webm.ag list a few popular services that we have spoken about, and mention their advantages and disadvantages. Web Designer Ledger and W3Designing both have listed 30 effective font replacement techniques each. These resources can prove to be extremely useful to web designers.

In order to choose the best technique, a designer would have to make educated choices and informed decisions. It may all depend on the experience and knowledge of the designer. What one must remember is that when text is replaced with images or Flash, it may not be very good for SEO. Moreover, with HTML5 and CSS3 on the rise, web designers must be open to newer services and try to catch up with the latest in cyber town.
